A truly innovative conveyor belt system which totally encloses the load to turn sharp corners and steep inclines without spillage, like a roller-coaster, has been developed by Sicon Roulunds AB of Helsingborg, Sweden, The patented Sicon conveyor relies on the strength, flexibility, and rugged durability of DuPont™ Neoprene polychloroprene synthetic rubber for the essential belt at the heart of the system.
Running between a series of support and vertical guide rollers, the Neoprene belt adapts from a U-shape at the bulk material loading point, to a pear shape for safe containment of materials routed along the conveyor, then returns to flat for efficient discharge.
In its pear shape configuration the belt acts like a pocket to contain abrasive aggregates, rocks and other materials, eliminating the potentially hazardous and wasteful spillage problems so common with many open-conveyor systems.
Sicon conveyors can run safely at speeds up to 5 metres per second and handle as much as 400 m3 of materials per hour in lumps as large as 70 mm. Thanks to the flexibility and stability of Neoprene, the belt can turn sharp corners with a minimum curve radius of only 0.6 m while loaded. Inclines as steep as 35° can be negotiated without spillage because the materials are totally enclosed right up to the discharge point. The result is a highly efficient, compact system that takes up considerably less space than a conventional belt conveyor. Discharge can be made either vertically or horizontally. In both cases, the belt opens flat by gradual transition from pear shape and it returns with the dirty side inward for an exceptionally clean operation. Thus, the belt can transport material on the return run, making the Sicon a true two-way conveyor.
With conventional conveyors, a certain amount of environmental pollution from spillage or dusty materials is inevitable, But Sicon Roulunds AB's patented system based on Neoprene is as kind to the environment as totally enclosed systems, yet has all the flexibility of a conventional rubber conveyor belt.
Sicon conveyors are used to transport a very wide range of bulk materials. Waste materials like fly ash and gypsum from power stations are handled safely and without environmental contamination. Hazardous waste from paper making is also carried securely within Sicon's closed Neoprene belts from the plant to kilns where all possible contaminants can be incinerated to harmless residues.
