AutoFocus - News of high performance polymer and elastomer solutions in automotive

Welcome to the April 2010 edition of AutoFocus, the global eNewsletter from DuPont Automotive Performance Polymers that delivers news and expert opinion about high performance polymers and elastomers solutions for powertrain, chassis, fuel and air management systems.

EGR is our key topic in this edition. As turbo charging technology evolves to meet CO2 reduction requirements demanded by Euro 6 and other global emissions standards, the drive to reduce NOx emissions is leading to the adoption of EGR systems. Recycling exhaust gases back into the engine results in gas compositions that are very aggressive to many sealing elastomers and to polymers used in EGR systems.

The topics in this edition:

  • Laboratory tests prove suitability of Vamac® AEM and Viton® FKM for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) sealing

  • DuPontTM Vespel® polyimide offers weight and performance advantages over metal in EGR valve bushings

  • DuPont Technical paper "Fluoroelastomer Compatibility with Bioalcohol Fuels" judged "among most outstanding" of 2009 by SAE International

  • New DuPontTM Zytel® PLUS launched to help automotive OEMs reduce weight and cost in auto components

  • Economic outlook: Recovery from worst global recession continues in most countries, US motor sales highest in over a year
